The club is dark and loud, reeking of alcohol and cigarettes. The band has just finished playing, as you notice your ex-girlfriend walking through the door. Your next reaction is to ask the girl standing next to you if she will be your girlfriend for the next five minutes. What would you do if her response was to kiss you? This is how Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan set readers up for one of the wildest teenage books of 2006.

Nick and Norah opens in a gay-straight music club in Manhattan. Nick is the bassist in a queer core band and Norah is there checking out the music.

It becomes hard for Nick to focus, once he discovers his recent ex-girlfriend hanging out in the same club with her new boyfriend. Nick quickly runs off stage when his band is done playing and meets Norah, another frequent member of the club at the bar.

Norah is busy watching over her best friend, Caroline, before she gets herself into any trouble. Nick asks her to be his girlfriend for five minutes to either draw off his ex, or to at least distract him from her. He doesn’t expect Norah to kiss him in response. Norah doesn’t think that Nick would be such a good kisser.

This one kiss throws both teenagers, Nick’s band and Norah’s best friend into one of the wildest adventures of their lives.

As the night goes on, from the club where the two met, to a transvestite bar, all the way to Park Avenue, Nick and Norah battle themselves for their

feelings of the person they had met just hours before.

Both Nick and Norah find themselves in an emotional battle over their exes and each other

“I really loved Nick and Norah’s because I thought it was cute and I love how their relationship turns out in the end,” said sophomore Karis Robichaud.

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist also caught a Hollywood director’s eyes and the book was turned into a movie in 2008 and brought in over $31,000,000 at the box office. This book is good for fans of realistic fiction, comedy, and romance.

TORONTO, CANADA- Traveling to the Antarctic with Students on Ice taught me things that I may never have learned without this unique experience. Of course, we all gained significant knowledge about the South Pole – facts and figures and such. However, it is what I learned through the experience of being surrounded by such extraordinary people in such an extraordinary environment that has truly impacted my life.

Forming the strong relationships I did with the students on the trip lead to my realization of a few different things. For one, I learned that everybody has something to offer, whatever that is, and because that thing is unique to that one person, it is valuable. Furthermore, to label or judge people because of the way they look, talk, or where they’re from does nothing but limit a relationship. What I am referring to rather is tolerance, in that in order to form a strong relationship with someone, one must be able to embrace their perhaps less desirable qualities as much as they embrace their desirable qualities.

For me, one of the emerging topics of this trip was passion. The thing that struck me most all of the educators and chaperones that were on the trip was that they have all followed their passions. Before this trip, I had always thought that I would go to business school, get a degree, get a job that I can live with, and practice my passions on the side. However, meeting these truly inspiring adults has led me to question my own ideals and priorities that most definitely translate into life choices that I will soon be making. Talking to other students that were on the trip, I do believe that this coming of age was shared by many.

Being in an environment as untouched as Antarctica guided me to a realization of the fragility of the planet. Needless to say, it is difficult to imagine what somebody’s actions in New York, Toronto, or Shanghai have to do with the Antarctic. However, I have learned that much of what humans do around the world effects the environment, whether that environment is Central Park or Deception Island in Antarctica. Furthermore, small changes in the environment may not affect human beings; however, they may have a tremendous impact of the environment.

For example, it was a common sight throughout the trip to see penguins laying belly-down in the snow. The penguin equivalent to a mist fan on a warm summer’s day, lying in the snow is one way penguins cool down in the heat of the summer. This sight led me to wonder what were to happen if the earth continued to warm even gradually over decades. Therefore, the way humans choose to live their lives can have a direct impact on not only their surrounding environment, but the global environment.

Indeed – a delicate planet we inhabit.

Pressuring the Chancellor’s Office to use performance data isn’t the only item on the mayor’s agenda, either. The mayor also wishes to provide charter school funding as well as allowimg principals to make merit-based decisions on teacher’s tenure, rather than seniority based.

A major incentive to change these standards is largely due to the fact that the DOE can receive hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding via President Obama’s Race to the Top education reform program. This program, which has seen a large amount of popularity in organizations across the United States, will grant money to those school systems using original programs.

“The only thing worse than having to lay off teachers would be laying off great teachers instead of failing teachers. Remember who this system’s supposed to work for: the students, not its employees,” said Mayor Bloomberg in a Washington D.C press conference.

“With a transparent new evaluation system, principals will have the knowledge to make layoffs based on merit – but the ability to do so only if the State Legislature gives us the authority to do so, and so we will pressure them to get that authority.”

According to the UFT website, Chancellor Joel Klein originally proposed in 2007 to use student test scores as a part of the decision to grant tenure. At a later date, the Department of Education decided that it will not change tenure standards as well as criteria for granting tenure to new teachers in the future.

“The issue, as the teachers have been saying, it is that we have narrowed our curriculum so much to just teaching for the test, and that would be the state test, that were not teaching children everything that they need to learn in their subject areas,” stated UFT President Michael Mulgrew in a television appearance.

Using standardized test scores to determine a teacher’s tenure may seem unfair and unbeneficial to the teachers, but Mayor Bloomberg continues to remain confident about his decision.

“Now, we all know that great teaching is reflected in more than test scores – but we certainly should never dismiss quantitative data in favor of subjective opinions that fit a predetermined conclusion. That might make all of us feel good, but it really doesn’t help our children,” continued Mayor Bloomberg.

This announcement may seem to spark a larger argument between the UFT and the city, but as the contract negotiations begin for NYC teachers, it is unclear what will become of the relationship between teachers, Mayor Bloomberg, and Chancellor Joel Klein.

This weekend, pride parades in Hong Kong, China and Taipei, Taiwan kick off what many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) Asians hope will be a new era of tolerance.

Events like Taipei’s “Love Out Loud” parade October 31, the largest in Asia with a turnout last year of 18,000, are milestones in a continent where homosexuality can still be illegal.

“It is a platform from which to not only pressure legislators to push for LGBT rights, but also a venue to change the public’s consciousness and views about homosexuality,” said Oscar Atadero to Fridae Magazine when asked about his role in organizing the first gay pride march in Asia in 1994.

The social awareness raised by pride parades is a force in stopping the denial, ignorance and brutality against the LGBT community.

“You are what you are,” said sophomore Leorie Beriguete.

In some places progress has been made. Last month Indonesia overturned legislation that would have permitted public whipping, stoning and imprisonment of homosexuals and adulterers in the Banda Aceh province.

Aceh, known for the devastation it endured from the 2005 tsunami, is semi autonomous from the central government located in Jakarta. Aceh’s 69-seat house unanimously passed the legislation on September 14, but the local government then sent it to the Supreme Court for review; on September 22 the legislation was revoked.

This July India’s Delhi high court amended Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, a colonial law instated 149 years ago by the British, because its description of same sex relationships as “unnatural offenses against the order of nature” violated fundamental rights to personal liberty (Article 21 of India’s constitution), equality (Article 14) and prohibition of discrimination (Article 15). Until this, homosexual acts were punishable with a 10 year prison sentence.

Most Asian countries, however, retain such laws.

Despite many references to homosexuality in ancient art and literature, homosexuals in Asia today have been withheld civil rights, abused or killed in a culture that often denies their existence.

China only ceased to consider homosexuality a disease in 2001, a move the US made in 1973, although it has a cultural legacy of homosexuality dating to 1027 BC in the stories of Mizu Xia, Pan Zhang, and Lord Yang, classic tales of love written during China’s Zhou period.

The Hwarang, elected leaders of a military group during Korea’s Silla Dynasty (BC 57- AD 953), celebrated same-sex love in vernacular poetry such as that found in the Sam-Guk-Yu-Sa. Yet, in 2002 when the Lesbian and Gay Alliance against Discrimination, the Lawyers for a Democratic society and Exzone.com sued the Korean government after its Information and Communications Ethic Committee classified homosexuality under “obscenity and perversion” in its “Criteria for Indecent Internet Sites,” the court took cue from 1997’s Youth Protection Act classifying “homosexual love” as “harmful to youth” – and ruled that freedom of speech and expression were not applicable regarding homosexuality.

“That’s ridiculous. They’re exactly the same thing,” said junior Talissa Rosario. “There’s no difference between gay sex and straight sex.”

In 2003 the Korean National Human Rights Protection Committee advised Korea’s Youth Protection Committee to amend the 1997 Youth Protection Act, removing anti-gay language, which had been the basis of the ruling in Exzone vs Korea.

Singapore is not as progressive. Its Media Development Authority fined a cable station $15,000 for showing a gay couple and their adopted child after consulting with the Programme Advisory Committee for English Programs, which agreed in a statement on its website “that a gay relationship should not be presented as an acceptable family unit.”

“We have to realize everyone has the same feelings; We have to care more for one another,” said Youth Development Worker Mrs. Hattie Slaughter, who has worked in every high school in Staten Island.

According to Fridae magazine’s article “Oscar speeches censored in 53 Asian countries?” on April 25, “… the words ‘gay’ and ‘lesbian’ in Milk writer Dustin Lance Black and actor Sean Penn’s Oscar speeches have been muted out during the recorded broadcasts.”

Accepting an invitation from university leader Lee C. Bollinger to speak at Columbia University. Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s official statement on the execution of gays in the Islamic Republic (some 2,000 in 2008) was that “In Iran, we don’t have homosexuals.”

But there are, and LGBT Asians, whose existences are denied, are victims of hate crimes. “There have been killings documented in Iraq and other parts of Asia. The Human Rights Watch is an excellent group on that,” said Mr. Kevin Cassidy, executive manager of communications and external relations for the UN’s International Labor Organization.

The UN proposed a gay-rights declaration in December, but it is still in limbo. Non-signatories were south Asians, and surprisingly, the United States under the Bush Administration – the only Western government that refused. In a quick turnaround, the Obama Administration is reversing this position.

LGBT rights are far from settled. The president of the United Nations, Ali Abdussalam Treki, opened its 64th General Assembly and responded to calls for the universal decriminalization of homosexuality but stated that, “As a Muslim, I am not in favor of it …. It is not accepted by the majority of countries. My opinion is not in favor of this matter at all . . . And there are some countries that allow that, thinking it is a kind of democracy . . . I think it is not.”

It has been 3 years since their last CD release, but in September 2009, Boys Like Girls, a Pop Punk band from Boston, Massachusetts, released their highly anticipated second album, Love Drunk. Their first album, self titled, Boys Like Girls, had wildly popular hits since 2006. Songs like “Hero Heroine” or “Thunder” have been hits all over the globe and are on Billboard’s Top 100 songs for Pop.

Love Drunk doesn’t really disappoint because Martin Johnson, lead singer and writer of all the songs on the CD, sticks to what he knows is going to be a good song: love, heartbreak, and the motivation to do something about it.

Their first single, “Love Drunk” hit the radio over the summer and became a major hit with teenage fans. The song is about how someone used to be head over heels in love, and not realizing that there was plenty of problems with the relationship.

Boys Like Girls’ second single, “She’s Got a Boyfriend Now” was available on iTunes in the beginning of August 2009 as an early release single for pre-ordering the digital copy of Love Drunk, but the song was never played on the radio. It’s a very upbeat song that many can dance to.

The last song of the album, “Go” is by far one of the best written by Johnson. It has a very easing melody, played with mostly acoustic guitars and violins in the beginning of the song and during the instrumental at the end. The song is about how you should “dig yourself out of a rut, no matter what the rut is, like an addiction, or a bad relationship,” said lead singer Martin Johnson in a recent YouTube interview.

The album did have a major flaw though, the duet with Taylor Swift on “Two Is Better Than One”. “The song doesn’t have a fast beat; it’s downtrodden and it sounds like Martin isn’t enjoying what he’s doing,” said sophomore, at the Notre Dame School in Manhattan, Gabby DeLorenzo.

Love Drunk will probably not be as great as Boys Like Girls.

“Love Drunk is awesome, but if you go back to the first album, it was more popular with stronger songs, like ‘Hero / Heroine’” said sophomore Leorie Beriguete. BLG always has a great lineup of songs, but Love Drunk has just kept them on the safe side, and there are a few songs that seem to take Boys Like Girls a step back, songs like “Contagious” or “The Real Thing”.

“Boys Like Girls’ lyrics are rather childish, and lack originality,” said sophomore, Nasir Kujenya.

Overall the album’s pretty solid for their second album. Their tunes are all catchy and mostly upbeat. Their romantic melodies will be a great hit for their hardcore female fans and anyone who can relate to the song’s subject.

We all know the many four-lettered words that can’t be said on public television, written in newspapers, or exclaimed in the middle of class. And, despite their outward secrecy, we all know exactly what the words are and how to use them. Well, there may soon be another word to put into the same pile, the debatable r-word.

March 31st marked the beginning of the Special Olympics’ campaign to ban the word “retard.” According to specialolympics.org, the goals of this campaign are to communicate the hurtful nature of the word and remove it from daily use.

“We are trying to reach 100,000 pledges on-line to end the use of this word,” said Elizabeth Forest, the Assistant Director of Development at the NY branch of the Special Olympics.

The pledge is simple yet powerful. It states, “I pledge and support the elimination of the derogatory use of the r-word from everyday speech and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.”

So far, the Special Olympics’ goal is halfway met; about 50,000 people have taken this pledge on their website.

The reason for this campaign is also straightforward. Retardation has developed a new meaning. Mental retardation was what doctors, psychologists, and other professionals used to describe people with significant intellectual impairment. Today, it has become an insult for friends, enemies, and people with actual disabilities.

“In modern language, the use of the word ‘retarded’ is more commonly used as a way to lower others’ self esteem. It is rarely used in its proper meaning,” said junior Brian Lopez.

And that is what has sparked the campaign and the great support it is receiving from many New Yorkers.

“I am very much for the banning of the r-word because we should be using ‘people-first’ language,” said Ms. Linsey Miller, the Assistant Principal, I.A of the Hungerford school. “Even using ‘handicapped’ or ‘disabled’ isn’t using ‘people-first’ language because it stereotypes people. Who are these people? They are people, first. They are moms and dads, students and teachers, scientists, actors, and more.”

In fact, the Special Olympics has made an effort to introduce the mentioned ‘people-first’ language into all of their pamphlets and speeches. People-first language puts the person before the disability, and it describes what a person has, not who a person is. Therefore, Joe Smith is not disabled nor is he suffering from a disability; Joe Smith simply has a disability.

Admittedly, in many instances, the word has simply floated into our modern lexicon as an innocent joke or taunt. Whether accompanied by a slight punch on the arm or a rolling of the eyes, the word isn’t always taken seriously. Nevertheless, the relationship between the original meaning and the insult to people with disabilities undeniably exists.

Of course, teenagers know it does. In a nationwide survey on specialolympics.org, 63% of teens admitted to feeling sorry for the person whom the word was used against. Yet, only 50% took the effort to stop the use of the word.

However, would a ban be an effective way to correct this behavior? The bans on other prohibited words

like the n-word and f-word did little to stop their use.

“People shouldn’t associate silly or stupid actions with the word ‘retard’,” said senior Lianna Inzerillo. “However, one’s freedom of speech is at stake if we start banning such words. So the best bet would be to think about what you say.”

The worry over freedom of speech is recognizable. Perhaps that is why the Special Olympics is focusing on gathering supporters on a personal level, with its efforts to further educate the public on the appropriate use of the word and encouragement to take the pledge.

“I suppose every person has the right to speak his or her mind, but their words should not hurt others,” said junior Stav Vaknin.

One out of every five people in America have a disability that would have once labeled them as retarded. However, all five out of five people in America have the right to say what they wish.

In the end, it doesn’t come down to what is ‘politically correct.’ Rejecting the r-word is, as the Special Olympics is arguing, more like common courtesy and good manners.

In 1898, with the formation of The City of Greater New York, Staten Island became a part of NYC. Since then, Staten Island has been known as the forgotten borough. And frankly speaking, it is. Yet before anyone is too quick to defend the city’s negligence of Staten Island, it’s important to get in touch with reality.
The Verrazano-Narrows is the only intra-city (borough-to-borough) bridge that charges commuters. None of the other bridges within the New York City limits charges a dime, let alone $10 cash. Even local residents, with the EZ-Pass and Resident discounts, are required to pay $4.80 to come home at the end of the day.
Yet, of all the short hands Staten Island is dealt, it’s the fact that not all of the money raised goes towards bettering Staten Island that is most disturbing. While the MTA uses the funds to service and staff busses, Staten Island’s bus service is well below the par set by the other four boroughs. What is even more shameful is how terrible of a job the city has done providng Staten Islander’s an alternative to busses. Not only does the Staten Island Railroad service only a small portion of the island, but it is a poor substitute to the extensive subway system found in each and every New York City borough.
We are also the only borough without a public hospital. Both hospitals on the island are private, and Richmond University Medical Center (formerly Saint Vincent’s Hospital) has recently been facing fiscal issues, which brings up the issue of healthcare neglect from the rest of the city.
Even moving beyond simply moaning about how much neglect the island has been subject to, it’s easy to see how different Staten Island is from the rest of the city. There are only half a million people in this smallest borough. There are over a million people in every other borough: 1.6 in Manhattan, 1.3 in the Bronx, 2.5 in Brooklyn, and 2.2 in Queens. Staten Island is also significantly more suburban, and politically, the island tends to vote in the opposite direction of the rest of the city’s residents.
As a result, the best solution for Staten Island is to secede from the rest of the city. State Senator John Marchi introduced this idea in the early nineties, and Staten Islanders overwhelmingly voted in favor of it. Yet Albany didn’t even put the matter to a vote, dismissing the issue.
Now State Senator Andrew Lanza plans to reintroduce that legislation. Every Staten Islander should support this legislation.
It’s a matter of principle. Send lawmakers in Albany and Manhattan a message from the long-suffering people who are sick of mistreatment and neglect. Secede from New York City!

Several months ago, again, it was proposed that Staten Island secede from New York City. I vehemently disagree with this idea. It makes absolutely no sense once you examine the numbers. Staten Island should simply stay with NYC. Doing otherwise is detrimental to both the citizens and Staten Island as a whole.
How would secession affect Staten Island economically? Well, Staten Island gets nearly $200 million more in services from the city than it gives the city in revenue.
Many argue that Staten Island is taken for granted by the city, but giving us an extra $200 million is not taking us for granted. In fact, with all the complaining and moping around that Staten Islanders do about their lot in life, Staten Island seems to be taking the city for granted.
Why loose free money? Independence would mean huge tax increases and service reductions.
Also, New York City has the best tap water in the world. If we secede, there is the possibility that Staten Island would then have to pay to use the city’s water supply. No one wants to pay higher taxes when the payment can be avoided by simply not seceding. This is but one example of the many services that Staten Island would lose if they leave.
What about the MTA, that quasi-governmental agency? We may have bad public transportation service now, but we run the risk of having none at all if we secede.
Moreover, the relationship between the Island and City Hall is continuing to improve. Mayors Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg have improved this relationship, and daily more attention is being brought to Staten Island. We are no longer the “Forgotten Borough.” The Island’s position at the table is getting better with every passing day. The Island shouldn’t secede now that we are finally gaining power.
Furthermore, we would lose our sense of identity and historical continuity. Staten Island has been a part of New York City for as long as anyone can remember. Our identity is inextricably caught up with that of the City. There is no separating the two.
There is absolutely no reason to secede. This idea is ridiculous, and a rather silly way to spend our time and energy. There are a thousand other problems on the island that we should be focusing on. Running away from our parent city like a rebellious child is not one of them.

What is racism? How do people learn to gain a sense of identity? And why are some pushed away because of their ethnic background? These are some questions many people ask that can not always be answered. Fortunately, Ms. Violetta Surowiec took her Spanish Four class to see “La Gringa,” a play that shows the true meaning of racism and the perseverance of one girl to learn about her identity.

Moreover, the fact that the play was in Spanish, challenged the students in Spanish Four to understand what the play is about, and broaden their Spanish skills.

“The play ‘La Gringa’ was very interesting. Even though I am not a native speaker of Spanish, I still understood the plot of the play and learned how it is to assimilate into a new culure,” said junior Raya Dyadkina.

The day opened with an introduction to the play by Robert Weber Federico, Executive Director for “La Gringa.”

Mr. Federico raises funds, speaks to the audiences, plans for upcoming productions, and makes administrative decisions at Reperatorio Espanol.

Mr. Federico explained that the play was based upon the writer, Carmen Rivera, and her life experiences as a young girl. She too was born an American, in the Bronx, but stayed true to her ethnic background as a Puerto Rican. In fact, like the main character in this play, Maria, Carmen also had a very mean aunt, and a fascinating uncle.

The play is about a Puerto Rican girl named Maria, who arrives in her home land, Puerto Rico, and is very excited. She stays with her uncle, Manolo, his sister Norma, Norma’s husband Victor, and their daughter, Maria’s cousin, Iris. Maria’s uncle is very ill, and she develops a special relationship with him. After her first day of sightseeing in her homeland, she decides to stay in Puerto Rico and look for a job.

After searching for a job, Maria eventually receives an interview with an insurance company and hopes to ace it so that she will be able to work for the company. Her desire to stay in Puerto Rico does not please her aunt and cousin. Maria does not get the job because she’s told that she is not Puerto Rican. This shakes her entire cultural identity, and she decides to leave the island and never return.

After her uncle passes away, she goes to the cemetery, connects with her family history and begins to regain her sense of identity.

Reperatorio Espanol is located on 138th East, and 27th Street, and was founded in 1968 by producer Gilberto Zaldivar and Artistic Director René Buch to introduce the best of Latin American, Spanish and Hispanic-American Theater in distinctive productions. It was also formed to bring theater to audiences in New York City and across the country, including Hispanic students of all national backgrounds. Federico joined the company two years later as Resident Designer and Associate Artistic Producer.

“I think the play was amazing, as it portrayed the feelings of many children who are born in the US to immigrant parents. They lack an identity as, they are torn between the country of birth and country of their parents/grandparents. I would definitely go back to see this play again next year,” said Spanish teacher Ms. Violetta Surowiec.

“La Gringa” was a play that portrayed a message to those living through ethnic hatred and those trying to seek their identity.

Teenage years may have many setbacks, yet they can also be a wonderful and challenging experience, for they prepare you for adult life. So with teenage life as complicated as it is, why put up with abuse from a partner? Have confidence in yourself and the people around you to leave an abusive relationship.

A healthy relationship consists of partners being supportive of one another.
Does your partner support what you stand by, your views on sex, does he/she support your dreams and wishes?
Do you receive positive advice and guidance from your partner? Does your partner make you feel good about yourself and accept you for who you are? Does your partner make you feel bad about yourself, by judging you according to your looks and weight?
These negative labels are hazardous to your mental health.
In a healthy relationship, one feels emotionally and physically safe.
A compassionate partner is concerned about your security, health, and overall well-being. This shows they care and always want what is best for you.
According to various Internet sources, there are warning signs of an abusive relationship.
Take a minute to read some typical signs in order to determine whether your relationship is a healthy one or not.
*Your grades in school have changed significantly since you started seeing
this person.
*You are concerned about how your partner will act in response to the things you say or do.
*You consider expressing your own thoughts or feelings because you fear your partner’s reaction.
*You worry you might make him or her mad by making the so-called wrong decision about what you wear or who you hang out with and where.
*Your partner tells you what you can and cannot do?
However, the main sign of abuse is threat. If your partner has ever threatened to hurt you, he/she most likely will. And if your partner already has threatened you, don’t think it won’t happen again, it will.
“Students with low self esteem sometimes end up in abusive relationships,” said guidance counselor Hatti Slaughter. “There are many reasons to leave an abusive relationship. It may be detrimental to a person.”
Don’t be scared to leave an abusive relationship. The longer you allow it to go on, the worse the predicament will be.
To end a dangerous relationship, be proactive, stay determined and get the help you need.
Remember that we all mumbled before we talked, and we all crawled before we learned how to walk.
Students don’t like school, but it doesn’t mean that should determine whether or not they should go. Likewise, a partner who holds you back from doing well in school, doesn’t care about you and is being selfish.
The most commonly used excuse among teenagers who are in an abusive relationship is that they have tried to end it. Who isn’t guilty
of pledging those words? Well, imagine somebody asking you if you are going to breathe today or if you are going to try to breathe today.
Now take a step back and think about your I tried moments.
If you didn’t get the memo already, there are no shortcuts in life. Nothing good in life comes easy. So stop making excuses for yourself or your partner. Don’t try to leave them. Just leave.
The easiest thing in life is to love somebody. It just comes naturally. Do not lie to yourself or to your partner and say you love them when you don’t. A relationship should not feel like a priority or a job.
When escaping from an abusive relationship, stay positive. Keep a can-do attitude. Don’t let anyone put you down.
Don’t sit around and wait for things
to fall into place. They won’t. Don’t lie to yourself thinking that your partner is going to change. They most likely won’t.
Take initiative, if you want something to happen. Don’t allow fear to trap you in. It’s never too late to leave. Don’t think a threat is normal or okay. Actions speak louder than words. These non-verbal cues may predict whether your partner may be capable of harming you.
Teenage life should be the most enjoyable years of your life. So don’t put up with any abuse. Stay strong and get away from the abuse. Don’t allow it to be a part of the journey. Stay confident and self aware.
Slim Shady in Show

Guess who’s back, back again? Shady’s back. Tell a friend. Once more, Eminem has jumped back into the music world with his new LP (Limited Play) “Refill” following his April 2009 album “Relapse.” These two albums are packaged together by Shady Records as equals, but “Refill” clearly outshines the other.

Eminem is known for his in- your-face, controversial lyrics from his past albums, and these two are clearly no exception. In “Refill” the lyrics talk much about his addiction to drugs, his fame, and at some points, his personal life.

“Even though he uses a lot of vulgar language, he’s one of the few rappers who doesn’t only rap about sex, drugs and alcohol, but situations he’s going through in his life,” said junior Danielle Ianazzi.

His relationship with his late friend Proof , played a major role in the album where he dedicates it to Proof and in the song Elevator where he talks of parts of their past within the chorus.

However, the lyrics were a bit weak in one song, Taking My Ball, which doesn’t have the same flair of his other songs. But some disagree with that.

“I love them, nobody else thinks about lyrics like he does. Every song is his own, no matter how much cursing is in it. He just raps about how he feels about life,” said freshman Alexa Riggio.

In the recording studio, Dr. Dre did most of the producing, but Eminem helped with some songs like Drop the Bomb on Em’ or the song, Elevator.

“I wanted to get out of the recording booth and into the studio,” Eminem said in a 2009 press release following his release of “Relapse”.

Almost all the music in the songs were excellent, with few errors.

“Some songs had beats that were boring, and way too repetitive,” said junior Brandon Pincay.

“Relapse” was released in April of 2009. It was number one on the charts for five weeks with a mere 650,000 copies sold within those weeks at first. This album was said to be good for a comeback. But actually, this album was extremely weak compared to Eminem’s top selling “The Eminem Show”.

This “Relapse” did have its moments though such as, Bagpipes from Baghdad and We Made You.

“Other than Bagpipes and We Made You, I didn’t really care much for the album,” said junior Glenn Kugelman.

The full album “Relapse” was mediocre, or average at best. While Em’s latest work ”Refill” is quite good. There were many mistakes made on “Relapse”, which were not made on “Refill” making it a better album and the one to listen to.
