The CSI/McCown varsity softball season has officially ended and just like the bases, the girls were loaded with excitement.

Despite the 14-1 losing streak during the ‘08 softball season, the girls worked hard this season to show what they are really made of.

“I feel we have a strong young team, and we play more experienced teams, but we came together and became closer than friends, which helps make a stronger team,” said freshmen outfielder Jamie Lepard.

With impeccable comradery, the girls have made an enormous comeback this year. Heading into the playoffs, the Dragons were tied for 4th place, out of eight Staten Island public schools, with nine wins and eight losses .

On April 27th, the Dragons put up a fight against the Tottenville Pirates.

Although the Pirates scored two runs in the first inning, the Dragons didn’t give up. Antoinette Galbo ripped an RBI triple in the third inning to get the girls on the move for an 8-2 trail after Tottenville. Although Galbo’s hit got the girls going, they lost 18-2.

With a loss on their shoulders the Dragons still gave it their all in their next game against MSIT.

Third basemen, junior Briana Kohm hit a blast over the left field fence for a three run homer. Unfortunately, the girls still walked away with a loss. But the girls didn’t stop there.

The Dragons gave Tottenville another run for their money. However, this plan back fired when the girls h a experineced a tragic loss with a score of 9-0 in their second game against Tottenville.

“Not that the team is lacking in either, but defense is always the struggle because I believe defense is the most important part of the game. Defense wins games. When your opponent can’t score, you can’t lose. We will face a variety of good pitchers, and I believe our offense will score runs, but the challenge, I believe, is always making the right plays and shutting down the other Staten Island teams,” stated coach Rosario Miano.

After hitting a little speed bump in their defense, the girls put on their game faces in their game against Petrides on May 5th. The Dragons exhaled fire for an outstanding victory over the Panthers, 20-0.

“This entire year has been such huge improvement, and our team spirit is so strong, especially since we’re looking at a spot in the playoffs.

The 20-0 victory over Petrides is just one game, but it shows how powerful we can be in the field and on the bench supporting each other and working towards our goals,” explained Captain Kristina Sanzone.

After several rainy days, the girls were back in action on May 8th against New Dorp. New Dorp scored three runs in the first inning. Although there were still 6 innings left, that’s all New Dorp Needed. The Dragons lost 3-1.

Picking themselves up from another downfall, the girls walked away with stunning victories their next two games against Petrides 18-6 and New Utrecht 20-16.

Next, two more losses against Port Richmond, and it was time for the biggest game of the season, the game that would determine the future of the team.

After all the anticipation, it seemed that Captain Sazone knew what her team was capable of doing.

Scoring an amazing nine runs, the girls went on to defeat Curtis 12-11 and advance into the playoffs, their first ever.

“I believe the difference in any game, especially when we play these tough Staten Island teams is making plays. The teams that win this time of the year are the teams that believe they can make plays, and then get on the field and get it done. I believe that we’ll make those plays,” continued Mr. Miano.

On May 28th, the Dragons versed Stuyvesant High School in their first ‘09 playoff game.

The girls started off with a fantastic lead in the first inning, scoring 2 runs against Stuyvesant. The mood in the air was intense, as the girls didn’t allow Stuyvesant to score a run until the third inning.

Putting the ball to the barrel, short stop Antoinette Galbo, captain and pitcher Corinne Fairlie and third baseman Briana Kohm all hit triples, giving the Dragons an astonishing victory with a score of 10-5.

In the second round of playoffs, the Dragons made their way to Brooklyn to play James Madison High School.

Holding the second seeded team until the fifth inning 0-0, the game ended with a 11-0 win for Madison.

Although the girls lost, they made hitory by being the first CSI/McCown team to make it to playoffs

Hopefully next season, the team will take the title as New York City Champions.

The Dragons continue to put their best claw forward in climbing the ladder to being one of the best teams on Staten Island.

The Dragon’s lair was once again filled to capacity for one of the final girls’ varsity basketball games against the rival, Raiders of Port Richmond High School. Much like the rest of the girls’ games there were both positives and negatives.

As a young team this season was as positive as it could be. All freshman and sophomores with the exception of one senior, and one junior the Lady Dragons’ are the youngest varsity team on the Island and are a force to be reckoned with in the near future.

The girls’ finished the season with a record of 1-11-0 and played exceptionally hard in all of their games. Senior, Briana Kohm, was a key player in the girls success this year, not only on the scoreboard, but with her varsity playing experience as a source of advice for many of the girls’ .

“Being the only senior, I was able to offer knowledge to the team, while gaining knowledge from the team as well,” said Kohm.

One of the sound traits of the Lady Dragons was their phenomenal defense. When the girls faced Petrides, one of the best shooting teams on the Island, they held them to only 52 points as the Panthers average 66 points per game and a high score of 75. The girls lost by eight in their efforts against Petrides but gained more than any win could on their season record, it gained them the knowledge and experience of playing sound team defense and the outcome and power of what it can do.

Likewise, on January 11, the girls’ versed New Dorp for the second time this season and made drastic improvements on the scoreboard. With great offense the girls’ were able to place their second highest score total at 38 points and keep the point spread at 21.

Yet, on January 21, the girls were determined to get their first win of the season. As soon as the Raiders stepped into the gym, the Lady Dragons’ knew it was time for business.

With a blow out first quarter at 11-5 in favor of the Dragons, the girls’ showed more heart and attentiveness then they did the whole season.

Sophomore Jennifer Carullo paired with Erin Kohm to make four three point shots in the first half. Freshmen Taylor Briggs and Danielle Kearney of McCown paired for six quick 2nd quarter points, which led the Dragons Briana Kohm to a quick 4 point 4 rebound surge late in the 2nd.

Sophomore Erin Kohm led the Dragons at half with 11 points, as the Dragons were up 25-16. The Dragons cruised through the rest of the night to win with a final score of 48-44.

The Lady Dragons’ will all return next year for another season of play with the exception of one player, Briana Kohm. Unlike every other team on the Island, the Dragons will have had a season to “themselves” and will return with a better, smarter team next season.

“My girls are working hard each and every day. We are getting better as a team, and we are looking forward to making a name for ourselves in the near future,” said Coach Nicole Stefanski.

In countries all over the world, Valentines Day is celebrated in many ways. Valentine’s Day is known as a day for love and friendship. We have adapted to the American way of celebrating this holiday, which is the typical purchasing of roses or chocolate for loved ones, spouses, or friends. Valentine’s Day is known to bring the out the good side in people, but is it the same internationally? Valentines Day, in Japan, is celebrated by having Japanese females, give Japanese males milk or dark chocolate. “They give chocolate to people they do like and don’t like,” said Japanese teacher Mrs. Higashide. In Japan Valentine’s day shows love to everyone. However, on March 14 also known as White Day, Japanese males give white chocolate to Japanese females, but have the luxury of actually choosing their own gift. Valentine’s Day in Japan honors both males and females.

According tohttp://www.novareinna.com, the custom on Valentines Day in Denmark isto be humorous and have fun. Danish men give females a valentine letter known as gaekkebrev (or “joking letter”) The sender of this gaekkebrev writes a poem but does not sign his/her name. Instead, he signs the message with dots, one dot for each letter in his name. If the lady who receives the card guesses the name of the sender, then she is rewarded with an Easter egg later on that year.

According to www.everythingvalentinesday.com, Scotland celebrates a Valentine’s Day festival. At the festival, an equal number of men and women’s write their made up names on paper and fold it half, and put them into two separate hats. The men choose from the women hat, and the women choose from the men’s hat. If the names that were drawn don’t match, then the male is matched with the woman who chose his name. The ladies pin the name of their partner over their heart or on their sleeves. Later, there’s a dance where everyone meets up and they celebrate with their partners.

In France , a custom known as “drawing for” once occurred because later on becomes banned. According to, http://www.novareinna.com unmarried individuals would go into houses facing each other and begin calling out across from one window to another, matching up with the chosen partner. If the young man failed to be interested with his valentine, he would leave her. Later, a bonfire will be lit where the ladies could burn images of the ungrateful partner and say bad things while the picture burns. This ritual was eventually banned by the French government because people would abuse one another. Today, the French exchange greeting cards known as cartes d’amities, which contain heartfelt messages.

In China, Valentine’s Day is celebrated somewhat like it is in the U.S. “Gentlemen purchase flowers for the ladies,” said Geometry teacher Ms. Anney Li. In Chinese high schools, flowers are sold and they are distributed to the classrooms, like we do at our school. Restaurants are definitely places that older couples go to, to eat on Valentine’s Day. Many different countries celebrate Valentine’s Day. Whether it’s going out to eat, celebrating a festival, or watching pictures of ungrateful men burn in fire, like in France. “I personally like Valentine’s day because I think it’s nice to feel special on that day, to know you are loved by someone else,” said junior Marisch Perera. Valentine’s Day should be celebrated with the ones you love, and in a unique way.

With Regents, new schedules, transcript grades, and Valentine’s Day around the corner, which high school student has really been paying attention to what President Obama has been doing these past several weeks? Well, these weeks are also when Obama has been making some very crucial decisions in education reform, particularly concerning former President Bush’s controversial No Child Left Behind Act. So let’s take a few moments to get updated.

Just to brush up on what we’re sure we already knew but maybe just forgot, the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act was established by Bush in 2001 in hopes of improving the national education system. It enacts the theories of standards-based education reform, which is based on the belief that setting high standards and measurable goals can improve individual outcomes in education. In fact, it is very comparable to our school’s SMART goals.

Like our SMART goals, the NCLB act has not been without some disapproval. Most of this stems from the way by which these set standards are measured- testing, school evaluations, and more testing. Schools are encouraged to focus only on reading and math test taking skills, as opposed to a more creative and individual approach to education. This approach may even be going back on the ultimate goal for the NCLB Act- to prepare students for careers. Knowing how to do better on a test without knowing the material itself cannot get a student very far in life.

“Some students just aren’t good test takers, but that doesn’t mean they’re not smart,” said junior Glenn Kugelmann. “A school with lower test grades doesn’t automatically mean it’s worse.”

That is why we believe it’s crucial to be shadowing Obama’s plans at this time. Though no concrete plans have been made yet, Obama has said he wants to keep the NCLB Act though with drastic alterations to certain parts. Rather than rating school solely on student test scores and placing all the administrations’ focus on testing, the president proposes to replace that system with a new accountability stem that incorporates many new factors.

“We want accountability reforms that factor in student growth, progress in closing achievement gaps, proficiency towards college and career-ready standards, high school graduation and college enrollment rates,” said Education Secretary Arne Duncan when announcing the proposed changes earlier this month.

As with many of his other reforms, Obama also wishes to invest billions of dollars in reforms for education in the States. As announced in his 2011 fiscal year spending plan, the president has allocated almost $50 billion towards education this year, which is $4 billion more than last year. Of that, a total of $1.3 billion of the additional money requested for the department would finance a third round of Race to the Top, a competitive school improvement grant program.

The program is essentially a competition between participating states and districts for the title of the ‘most reformed’ school and the extra money that comes with the title. New York is a participating state in the competition.

“If you set and enforce rigorous and challenging standards and assessments; if you put outstanding teachers at the front of the classroom; if you turn around failing schools – your state can win a Race to the Top grant that will not only help students out-compete workers around the world, but let them fulfill their God-given potential,” said Obama as he introduced the program in July 2009.

Competition never served anybody wrong. It makes our phone bills lower, health coverage better, and it may just make our education greater as our administration has some extra motivation for improvement.

Nothing is yet concrete in terms of Obama’s education reform. Yet, from what we’ve heard, things are certainly on the right track. Less emphasis on testing and greater motivation for improvement? Sounds just as sweet as that chocolate heart we’re all awaiting in a few days’ time.

FOR: Henna Tariq ‘11-

Many debates have been made about this subject—about whether or not it is wise to enforce the use of school uniforms. Students and some schools believe that school uniforms are a way of limiting one’s creativity. Creativity in fashion can easily be expressed during the remaining 16 hours of the day. What many students don’t see are the benefits of having uniforms in school. Having uniforms is time-efficient and money-efficient.

Many students struggle to get up in the morning as it is. And when they get up they spend their time worrying about what they are going to wear. This process is a very time consuming and tedious task. Uniforms are a simple solution to get ready in the morning. Plus, students look much more neat and professional.

Students will focus more on their studies than their clothes. No boys will be distracted from their test when a girl with an ultra short skirt sways into the room. No graffiti-ed T-shirt will ever cause a commotion.

Uniforms are also much more affordable to get than buying a new wardrobe of clothes every year or, for some people, every semester. This is a good way for families on a budget to save money on their children’s clothes.

Fellow uniform advocates also argue that uniforms will decrease the violence in schools due to gangs.

School has now become a popularity contest than about education. Students worry more about having the latest fashion trend or the most modern name brand rather than actually paying attention in the classroom. In this kind of rude awakening, we are forced to raise the question of whether or not the school is doing its part in fixing the situation. Uniforms will water down the cast system the student body has created amongst themselves.

Although the great debate continues to rage on more and more schools are considering changing their schools dress code and enforce uniforms, one thing is for certain—uniforms also illustrate a sense of family and community of the school they represent. And isn’t that what CSI strives for so badly?

AGAINST:Katherine Foote ‘12

What happened to individuality? Why should it be taken away from us? As you can guess, I’m not pro uniform. Uniforms take away our individuality and freedom to express ourselves without the use of words.

The clothing we put on for the day normally reflects our mood, personality, and attitude. They give us the chance to experiment with different styles to see what truly suites us. For some, clothes are just means to improve self-esteem, and develop an identity. I previously attended a Catholic school that required a uniform. At first, I didn’t mind it too much. However, as weeks turned into months, I soon became incredibly bored. There was nothing out of the ordinary; everyone wore the same thing every day! I soon became restless waiting for the next Dress Down Day, Sneaker Day, anything that would add some color and vibrancy to the dull blue uniform.

After high school, people aren’t going to stop judging you. The feeling of self-consciousness will forever be a part of everyday life, but how people handle it makes the difference. Someone who has decided what they were going to wear and is confident with the choice definitely going to have an advantage will have more self esteem and personality than someone with a uniform.

Having uniforms in a school does have its positives. It’s a lot easier in the morning to wake up and put on your uniform instead of searching for something. This saves time that you can use to make sure you’re organized and ready for school. A uniform takes the pressure off of some students that are very self-conscience and can’t stand the thought of being teased for what they decided to wear. If everyone is wearing the same thing, there is less competition and pressure to keep up with the ever changing trends.

Although uniforms have their positives, they have never been my thing. There is no variety and it’s very bland. Some people might say that clothing is too small to have such an effect; however, little things have a tendency to build up causing it to greatly impact life.

High school is a time for a lot of firsts; first jobs, first house parties, first loves, and of course the big one, first cars. Yeah, we all know the rules, always fasten your seatbelt and of course, the infamous don’t drink and drive. We’ve all heard it more than once, drinking and driving kills. But even more dangerous than driving intoxicated is driving ‘intexticated’.

Did you know that car accidents are the number one killer of teens in the U.S.? According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), in 2008, about eleven teens were killed in car crashes everyday. The Department of Transportation claims that a horrifying six thousand deaths were caused by inattentive drivers that same year.

“That’s a horrifying statistic when you consider that accidents caused by drivers using cell phones, texting, or taking their eyes off the road are entirely preventable,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood when announcing Focus Driven, an advocacy group for victims of cell phone related motor vehicle accidents.

We’re all taught from a very young age to wear our seatbelts and not drive while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. But perhaps the most dangerous distraction while driving is something as common as a cell phone. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates 1.6 million teens drive while reading or typing messages.

Texting has become one of the fastest and easiest forms of communication. Even adults and parents have picked up the habit. As fast and easy as it is to type out a text, it’s just as easy to end a life.

“Using a cell phone while driving is a common thing many people do. They don’t realize how dangerous it really is. It’s one thing to pick up the phone while your driving, but when you text you are physically taking your eyes off the road,” said police officer Johnny Pena of the 76th Precinct.

According to a 2009 survey by the Allstate Foundation, 49 percent of teens consider cell phones to be distracting, and think it is the number one distraction when behind the wheel. Yet, 82 percent of teens still admit to using cell phones while driving.

“I have voice to text recognition on my phone. I can just talk into my wireless headset, and a text will be sent to whomever I say in my phonebook,” said senior Corinne Mueller.

Many people are under the misconception that hands-free cell phones are safer than head-held cell phones. However, according to the University of Utah, hands-free phones are just as dangerous because conversations with others delay reaction times.

According to Allstate, cell phones are the most common distractions for drivers. But multitasking drivers have to pay the consequences for their actions. New York is one of six states that ban all hand-held cell phone use while driving, and also one of 19 states that recently put a ban on texting for all drivers.

“Under the new law, drivers can no longer read or send text or picture messages on their handheld device or laptop while their car is in motion. Lawbreakers face fines up to $150,” said William J. Smith, Communications Director at the District Attorney’s Office of the Richmond County.

Mr. Smith also said that in New York, anti-texting fines can only be imposed as a second offense. That means only if the driver appears to be breaking another law, he/she can receive a summons for texting. These summonses, which are issued by the NYPD, are processed by the DMV.

But the price of the lives that are put in danger when a driver is behind the wheel intexticated shouldn’t be compared to a mere fine.

If we admit to using phones while driving, and we know how dangerous it is, then why do we still put ourselves at risk? It’s not just about drunk driving anymore. There are so many distractions that can endanger not only your life, but the lives around you.

KeeptheDrive.com is a great resource to learn more about texting while driving, and how to be a great driver. It provides real stories and solutions to drive safely. So when you take the wheel, hold on to it. Put your phones down, avoid a crash, and save a life!

Are you stressed out about how you’re planning to pay for college? With the rising costs of tuition, colleges are becoming more expensive. Will tough economic times prevent you from attending and applying to college?

“It doesn’t have to. College is still a smart choice. The options may be tougher to weigh, and students and their families will need to dig a little deeper, but there is still a wide variety of opportunities out there,” said Cheryl Brown, director of undergraduate admissions at Binghamton University.

Scholarships are a great way for students to help pay for their education. A scholarship is a financial grant given to a student by an organization or school to help pay for their education. In simpler terms, it’s free money for school.

There are many places to find scholarships. On the internet, there are scholarship search engines that help. Scholarships.com and fastweb.com are two examples.

Fastweb.com, the oldest online scholarship matchmaker, gives students a list of schools matching their preferences and a profile on each school. In addition each school’s applications and scholarships are available. Scholarships.com allows students to create a profile and find scholarships based on academics, talents and interests.

According to bookrags.com, millions of scholarships go unused each year. Some of these unused scholarships suffer from lack of publicity. Others have few applicants because of lack of interest or qualifications, for example the Student Inventors Scholarship.

Merit based scholarships are awarded to students with academic achievement. They are given based on GPA, SAT, and ACT scores. The Walton Family Foundation Scholarship, which is administered by the Wal-Mart Foundation, awards a $3,000 scholarship based a high school grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4-point scale.

Furthermore, Need-based scholarships are given to low income families that are financially unable to pay for school.

Also, universities and colleges award athletic scholarships to promising high school athletes. To obtain an athletic scholarship, one must have the interest of a coach from a university. According to college-athletic-scholarships.com, you can be sought after by a coach or contact a coach yourself. If you choose to take the latter route, you should create a resume which includes your relevant statistics, varsity experience, awards won, current coach’s name and full contact information, as well as GPA, ACT and/or SAT scores, and any honors or AP courses you may have taken.

“A college coach will not recruit any athlete without good grades,” said physical education teacher Mr. Dennis Barrett.

There are also scholarships given to students by the school they are attending, which vary greatly based on each school. Schools often receive grant money from federal organizations to give to their students.

“Long Island University gave me my first scholarship for academic achievement. I was surprised and pleased that a school wanted me enough to offer me money to go there,” said senior Winsome Cheung.

And there are lesser-known scholarships and unusual scholarships given to those that qualify. These include scholarships for being left-handed, gay, tall, or even drinking milk on a regular basis. For example, the Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year award goes to ‘graduating high school senior scholar athletes’ that send in

photographs of their milk mustaches while the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America gives scholarships to students that are being treated for allergies or asthma.

An important tip when applying for scholarships is to start your search early and applying before the deadline. If you start early, you should have plenty of time to prepare your information and submission requirements to an organization. For instance, the deadline to register and submit your essay for Do Something Awards is March 1, 2010. One should read the qualifications carefully to be able to qualify. And as always, have someone review your work before submitting it.

“Students should be proactive in researching scholarships they may be eligible for as early as summer ‘10 for juniors,” said guidance counselor Mrs. Marie Pastena.

Although many scholarships are competitive, don’t be discouraged. Every student is unique and has an equal opportunity at scholarships.

However, be on the lookout for scholarship scams. Scholarships that say they are “guaranteed” or require an application fee are most likely scams. Being a finalist for a scholarship you never applied for is also most likely a scam. As always, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

The coed wrestling team has been fighting since the very beginning. Winning 6 out of 7 matches, our Dragons will continue to try and cling on to first place at their last meet of the year, which will be played over the mid-winter break. Stay tuned to PSAL.org for further details.

The team has faced many obstacles, but they always gave it their best effort and now they are fighting to be first place.

As of now the Dragon wrestling team is tied for first with Forest Hills High School. Even though they lost to Forest Hills they still have a chance to take the division title.

With the loss against Forest Hills High School the team was pushed to defeat anyone who stood in their way.

First up was a grapple with Erasmus High School. And the Dragons went back to business earning their sixth win.

“I’m very excited about their win. It was important to get a win after having our first loss.” said Coach Miano, who leads a strenuous practice with our wrestlers everyday.

The team shows up to every meet with only one thing in mind: winning.

“Our team works hard as usual and it shows. I am proud that I won because I go to practice everyday just like my teammates, that’s why we win, because we work hard,” said sophomore Sher Mohammad.

The wins did not stop at the meet against Erasmus. The team went on to win against Boys and Girls High School 24-12, and Benjamin N. Cardozo High School 30- 18.

As is often the case, when things are going well, they tend to keep going that way. Winning breeds confidence.

“In the ring when a wrestler is in his zone, all other sounds are blocked out. We showed them that skill beats strength,” said freshman Matthew Vainshtein. “Pain is temporary, pride is forever,”.

Come support our Dragons as they continue to wrestle their way to the top.

Ms. Guo teaches students Chinese

Last month our school welcomed a new Chinese teacher to the staff, Ms. May Guo. In addition to teaching Mandarin, Ms. Guo is a sophomore advisor.

Ms.Guo previously taught Mandarin Chinese for two years at KAPPA International High School in the Bronx.

“This school is very similar to the school where I used to teach because they both are international and both offer Mandarin programs. They both do international trips like going to Costa Rica,” said Ms.Guo.

With much experience, Ms.Guo likes to teach the Chinese language using different methods.

“ I like to use songs to teach Chinese vocabulary, and it also helps students with Chinese pronunciation. In learning characters, I’m sure the kids don’t like to simply memorize every character or write it over until it’s remembered. I like to use Liu Shu to help students understand characters and put parts together to form characters. Liu Shu is used to learn characters by understanding the category the characters are in. Liu Shu is also used in understanding the creator of the characters to understand the roots of each and expand on the vocabulary,” said Ms.Guo.

Besides being involved with school activities, Ms.Guo says she loves paper cutting, listening and playing the Chinese Harp, Origami and some simpler sports such as jogging, hiking, and traveling.

We are all so pleased to have Ms.Guo teaching at our school.

Participants run into the frigid water.

It’s winter. It’s December. So who would jump into freezing cold water?

It was a Saturday morning, foggy and gray, but that didn’t stop some brave souls of Staten Island from plunging into the ice-cold water at Great Kills Beach.

The Polar Plunge is one of the largest fund-raisers for the Special Olympics.

There are many ways to become involved with the Polar Plunge, but the best way to become involved, is by plunging.

The Polar Plunge allows participants to fund raise for the Special Olympics. Founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968, the Special Olympics is supported worldwide by high school and college students.

The Polar Plunge is an off-season fundraiser for Special Olympics run by the New York Law Enforcement Torch Run Officers.

Though law enforcement personnel coordinate and run the event, it is open to the public, and anyone willing to support a cause.

According to firstgiving.com, the Polar Plunge is part of the dedication to helping children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families.

“Attending the polar plunge was definitely worth it because it was for a good cause. I would definitely volunteer again, and hope to go to the plunge again next year,” said senior Angela Matrone

December 5th marked the date of this year’s plunge. Our schools team, the CSI Dragons, helped raise money for the plunge and with the minimum of $100, received an official plunge sweatshirt. Registration began at 9:00 AM, and the plunge started at noon.

The Barret and Miano Advisories teamed up to sell Polar Plunge wrist bands, and spread the word about the plunge. Both Barrett and Miano attended the plunge, and jumped into the chilling water.

“I was overwhelmed with joy and excitement when the plunge started. I kept telling myself jumping in the freezing cold water was for a good cause. Unfortunately, my toes were numb for about thirty minutes after,” said Mr. Barrett.

The Polar Bear Plunge is not just for the Special Olympics, but it also benefits participants who earn community service hours while swimming in the icy water.

“Last year’s plunge was so much colder, and I am really thankful it wasn’t as cold this year. Our school had a really great volunteer turnout, and I hope to continue volunteering with the Polar Plunge staff,” said senior Alexandra Crimmins, who first brought the idea of this fund raising event to our school last year.
