Many children love Halloween because they have the chance to trick or treat for free candy while dressed up in costumes. To celebrate the holiday, many places hold Halloween-themed events that all occur around the same time. The Staten Island Zoo holds one of these Halloween events: Spooktacular.

Spooktacular occurs the weekend before Halloween, October 23 and 24 this year. Workers and volunteers at the zoo participate and help with Spooktacular. Their goal is to entertain people of all ages. The main goal of everybody working at Spooktacular is to make sure that they make at least one person happy.

At Spooktacular, there are many events that visitors can participate in. Each year, the specific events change, but the basic idea stays the same.

This year, there were several short plays, exhibits to look at and walkthrough, costume contests, games, crafts, and characters walking around the zoo. Two of the plays presented were Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland. They are both adapted from their respective books, movies, and previous plays.

Sweeney Todd is about a barber, Sweeney Todd, out for revenge against a judge who wrongly imprisoned him to a life of hard labor. This short play is an excerpt from the play and movie and features one song and a short scene in the middle of the song. During the short scene, there is a bloody scene of a throat being slit and the victim sliding down a hole in the stage. This was very realistic and when it happened, the audience gasped in shock.

Alice in Wonderland was a production with a lot going on. This play follows a girl, Alice, who falls down a rabbit hole and meets an odd assortment of characters including the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the Red Queen, and the Caterpillar. This adaptation involved the Red Queen being jealous of Alice because the characters are only celebrating Alice’s birthday, even though it is the Queen’s birthday as well. The whole audience seemed amazed by the setup of the stage with a lot of attention to detail.

“Both Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland were so great! They were both amazing to look at with such attention to detail,” said sophomore Monique Cardenas.

The exhibits that people can walk through and look at are a very big part of the Spooktacular event. This year’s exhibits included an “alien zoo”, a “Harry Potter” section, and a hay maze.

The “alien zoo” included all sorts of “alien animals” that were meant to make people say “huh?” The “Harry Potter” section was mainly just the Tropical Rainforest wing of the zoo with little Harry Potter things added in. It featured different Harry Potter themed items and characters. The hay maze was a little maze made out of small hay bales. Parents can watch their kids find their way out of the maze.

“It’s like a family at the zoo… the people who do Spooktacular are very into it and so enthusiastic about it,” said employee at the zoo and Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, Alison Walminski.

Every person working at Spooktacular showed a lot of great enthusiasm. It was very obvious that everybody was completely absorbed in what they were doing at the moment. Not one performer showed anything less than their very best.

Based on the way most people were responding to the events, it seemed they were enjoying themselves. The sold out crowd of people in attendance was screaming and laughing all around. Whether the people were laughing hysterically or screaming in terror, one thing stayed the same, they were all having the time of their lives.

New Yorkers went wild after the New York Yankees won their twenty-seventh World Series. It took nine long years for the Yankees to claim their victory, and on November 4th, 2009, the Yankees did.

Due to the Yankees great hitting, outfielders, basemen, and pitching, the Philadelphia Phillies walked away with a tragic loss.

On October 28th, the New York Yankees lost the first game of the World Series at home. Philadelphia Phillies pitcher, Cliff Lee, stumped the Yankees with his fastballs, curveballs, and change-ups.

Even with the effort of the Yankees, including Derek Jeter who hit doubles and singles, the Phillies took the game 6-1.

Still, the Yankees shook it off as they walked on the mound the following day. Solo home runs were hit by both Teixeira and Matsui, and the crowd went wild as the Yankees won Game 2, 3-1.

Yankees filled the dugout for their third game, all decked out in pinstripes on a rainy Halloween in Philadelphia. The New York Yankees won their second game in a row with a score of 2-1.

They took this game thanks to Alex Rodriguez, whose hit was ruled a ground rule double on the field but later reviewed and determined a home-run. This was also the first instant replay call in World Series history.

On November 2nd, the Phillies were on top of their game. Alex Rodriguez put the Yankees on the board with an RBI double, but with a strong pitcher and lineup, Phillies took over. Attempts were made by the players to come back, but in the end of a close game, Phillies took the game 8-6.

Hideki Matsui, or as many know him, Godzilla, lived up to his nickname as he was named MVP on November 4th, although he was a triple short of the cycle. The Yankees brought home the title of World Series Champions with a 7-3 win against the Philadelphia Phillies.

“I thought it was awesome. I thought Matsui deserved the MVP award and his nickname Godzilla fits his performance. Jeter throughout the post season was in a slump, but hopefully next season he’ll be ready to hit. I believed the Yankees deserved to win the World Series,” said freshman Tommy LaCara.

Fans felt amazing over the Yankees’ win, for they have waited a long time for it to happen.

“I feel great. It’s been nine years since they won the World Series and it’s great to see the veterans like Jeter and Rivera win again and it’s great to see newcomers win like Sabathia and Matsui,” said Para- Professional Chris Adinolfi.

After twenty-seven World Series titles, baseball fanatics hold high expectations that the Yankees will win again.

The Yankees made it all the way this year, and victory is now theirs and ours.

Demi Lovato singing with fan MaryAnn at the Taj Mahal.

As the room darkened, the crowd went wild screaming and cheering for the special guest performer David Archuleta. A recording of a heartbeat echoed throughout the Taj Arena, stoking the crowds’ anxiety and excitement for the curtain to open and the concert to start.

On November 1, 2009 at the Trump Taj Mahal, in Atlantic City, the lights above the stage turned on and a dark, shadowy, figure appeared behind the curtain. The crowd began chanting “David, David, David” to welcome David Archuleta.

Then, the curtain was pulled down, and Archuleta began singing “Touch My Hand,” a song off his album titled “David Archuleta”. The crowd sang along to his songs and began swaying their hands from left to right, following the rhythm of the music.

Archuleta performed many of his songs including, “Touch My Hand,” “My Hands,” “Somebody Out There,” “Works For Me,” “Don’t Let Go,” “Your Eyes Don’t Lie,” “Waiting for Yesterday,” “Zero Gravity,” and “Crush.”

Then, David talked to the crowd, asking how everyone was doing, what people dressed up as for Halloween, and announcing his new Christmas album coming out in stores soon. Archuleta closed his performance with his popular song “Crush,” and there was a twenty minute break before Demi Lovato came out to perform.

“He was an awesome performer. I wasn’t a fan of his, but seeing him in concert makes me want to go and buy his CD,” said 16-year-old Carissa Torcivia.

After twenty minutes or so, the lights began to dim and everyone went crazy. The crowd now began chanting “Demi, Demi, Demi,” for Demi Lovato.

The music started, the stage was lit, and Demi Lovato came out opening her performance with “La La Land.”

Demi performed “La La Land,” “Gonna Get Caught,” “U Got Nothin’ on Me,” “Party,” “Trainwreck,” “Catch Me,” “I Gotta Find You,” “Solo, Stop The World,” “Two Worlds Collide,” “Every Time You Lie,” “Remember December,” “Here We Go Again,” “Did You Forget,” and “Get Back.”

Lovato shocked the crowd when she asked audience member16-year -old Mary Ann, who held a sign that read: “Can I Sing With You?” to sing the song “Gotta Find You,” with her.

“I actually had a dream about that [singing with Demi Lovato] last night… It was the best experience of my life, and she was really sweet,” said Mary Ann.

Then, right before Lovato sang “Two Worlds Collide,” she gave an inspirational speech on bullying and how her friend Sarah Wisely, who according to Shine On Media has a Eosinophilic disorder, is now being bullied because of it.

“I know how it feels to be that girl who’s getting picked on by the click at school. Rumors and gossip can be so much more than a punch in the face, words stick with you forever. You will go so much farther in life being good to people ‘cause I didn’t do anything bad and I’m here on this stage tonight.”

Lovato closed the show with her song “Get Back” off of her first album titled “Don’t Forget.”

“She’s a good singer and I feel like I can relate to her lyrics,” said junior Samantha DiMarco.

However, not everyone likes Demi Lovato’s music. “I really don’t like her music because it’s girly,” said freshman Hector Torres.

This show at the Taj Mahal, concludes Demi Lovato’s and David Archuleta’s tour together. It was crazy and the crowd was wild.

Day of the Dead altar set up oustide the Spanish classrooms.

Since when is death celebrated and seen as a joke? Every year on the day after Halloween, the Spanish culture celebrates the return of dead people’s spirits. This holiday became widely known as Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

“Students build an ofrenda [alter]. On the alter, Ms. Suroweic’s Spanish classes put traditional objects such as candles, skulls, and bread. Aside from different locations in America, mainly Mexico and some parts of Central America celebrate Day of the Dead. The Spanish culture is mocking the dead by placing sentimentals on the alter. This holiday is important because people have a chance to see other cultures and how they respond to death,” said Spanish teacher Ms. Elissa Garcia.

According to Ms. Garcia, more than 500 years ago, when the Spanish Conquistadors landed in Mexico, they came across natives practicing this ritual that seemed to mock death. The Spanish Conquistadors, or t

he Aztecs, believed that a person’s spirit never dies. This holiday is religious and has a connection to the Catholic holy days of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day by occurring on the same days.

“I’m in one of Ms. Suroweic’s Spanish three classes. First, we learned about Day of the Dead as it represents the celebration of people who passed away. Then, we wrote letters to family members, celebrities, and anyone who passed away. Basically, we colored pictures of skeletons and made an alter, such as the people do in many Spanish speaking countries,” said junior Shivanna Duncan.

According to the short novel El Día de Los Muertos by Mary Dodson Wade, people go to cemeteries to celebrate this day. Besides, making an alter, the Spanish bring yellow marigolds to the graves of the deceased because they are known as flowers of the dead.

This year, Ms. Suroweic’s Spanish classes, Ms. Garcia’s Spanish classes and the Spanish club celebrated Día de Los Muertos on November 2nd.

Today people create haunted houses to scare those who love to be scared.

There are five main haunted houses on Staten Island meant to scare everyone this Halloween. Trapped in Purgatory, Slaughter House, Fear in the Forest, St. Andrews Church, and the Salerno House are all places that are sure to make your spine tingle.

Trapped in Purgatory has been open for 15 years. Their theme this year is Sinister Swamp. Dennis Hansen is the master mind behind the 7900 square feet of terrorizing fun that consists of actors, a new corn maze and, of course, the haunted house.

“The numbers improve every year by 10% to 20%, but weather is a big factor. If there is rain, there is no business, and we won’t get people back again with rain,” said Mr. Hansen.

First, you start with the corn maze where monsters of all kinds pop out from the stalks. Then, make your way into the haunted house where you go through different rooms, each with a special sub theme within the theme.

But, make sure you are prepared for the surprise that awaits you at the end of your journey. Some may not be able to handle the fear factor in this room.

“When going in I felt terrified because I didn’t think it was going to be scary. I was surprised and was so scared, I came out shaking. Unexpectedly, I loved everything they had and wouldn’t say I had a favorite attraction. It was well worth the wait,” said sophomore Andrew Casale.

Those that dared to walk through the haunted house rated the place a four out of five on a scary level.

At Trapped in Purgatory, for only $15, you will find entertainment that will have the hairs on the back of your neck sticking up for days, located at 5050 Hylan Boulevard at Greenside Up Nursery, in Annadale. Open Friday and Saturday 7-11pm, and Sundays 6:30-10pm.

The Staten Island Slaughter House took four weeks and over 120 hours to create. Filled with 11 actors, blood, gore, a haunted house and barn, this one will definitely make you scream.

Jereny Dalessandro, who makes props for movies, is the man who gave life to this year’s theme, The Feast.

“Whatever I feel is basically how it’s created. We’re a prop company, so whatever props we make, we get ideas from,” said Mr. Dalessandro.

You wait on line to enter the horrifying haunted house that has walls, ceilings, and floors filled with blood and gore. After, you will go screaming into the barn where the beast awaits. Finally, you will make your way to the end of your adventure, hopefully in one piece.

“I enjoyed this haunted house. I didn’t think I would get scared, but I jumped a few times. If I had the chance I would definitely go again,” said sophomore James Casella.

The brave souls who wandered in and were lucky enough to come out gave this thriller a four and a half on the scary scale.

Staten Island Slaughter House is located at 2449 Veterans Road at Greenside Up Nursery, in West Charleston. Open Fridays and Saturdays from 7-11pm, and Sundays from 6:30-10pm, this thriller is only $15 and will have you screaming for more.

The Salerno House is a residence located on Amboy Road in the Huguenot, Annadale, area. For 25 years Patty and Dennis Salerno have been transforming their lawn into a creepy thrilling adventure for all Staten Islanders to enjoy.

“I do this because I love Halloween. I am obsessed with horror, witchcraft, magic, and I love seeing the kids reactions. I also do this for the people in my neighborhood,” said Mrs. Salerno.

Whether it is an execution or a hanging, or a vampire roaming around, watch you’re back, for you don’t know what is real and what is not.

Pinhead, Jason, Mike Myers, Texas chainsaw, Freddy, The Exorcist, Frankenstein and his bride, Mad Flasher and Dracula are just a few well known names that can be found on the front lawn of the Salerno house. The Salerno’s replicate movie characters from all your favorite horror films and bring them to life. Along with these well known names are characters like the Three Witches of Amboy, a pop up dead guy in a coffin, autopsy guy, a man being electrocuted, another being hung, and the man ready for the guillotine.

Opened every Friday through Halloween this residence has many creatures that are sure to pop out and scare you. It is free of charge but donations for NYU Children’s Cancer Foundation are always accepted.

“The reason I do the donations is because two of our neighbors have Hodgkin’s and non Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” said Mrs. Salerno.

St. Andrew’s Church puts on a scare for everyone during the Halloween season. Face your Phobia and go through the fifteen different phobia theme rooms.

The fears you will find in this haunted house are Taphephobia, Hierophobia, Hagiophobia, Necrophobia, Arachnophobia, Automatonophobia, Coulrophobia, Ophidiophobia, Hadeaphobia, Prosopeiophobia, Claustraphobia, Dentophobia, Nyfitsaphobia, and Lygophobia.

This church fundraiser has been around for over 10 years and is run by Donna Barr. Ms. Barr explained that each year is a different theme.

“Halloween is fun, and it’s my church and I love to help my church in anyway I can,” said volunteer, Peggie Kiernan.

As you make your way through the cemetery where creatures of all kind pop out, you soon arrive at church doors where your journey begins; the end is a dark basement. Those who braved the journey emerged shaking in fear.

“That was the best thing I have ever been through. I have no voice from screaming,” said Staten Island resident, Jill.

The blood runs down the bricks of the house a victims enter.

The people who journeyed through the historical yet haunted church all rated this haunted house a five on the scary level.

Located in Richmond Town, for only $8 you can also enjoy more fear. Open 7-10 p.m.. on October 23, 24, and 30.

Taking more than 75 people over three months to prepare, the six acre thirty minute walk at Pouch camp is a fundraiser sure to make you fear the forest.

“One, we had the opportunity to be in the forest, and secondly, it gave us an added dimension. Most places just have a haunted house, but we have inside and outside stuff,” said creator, John DeVaynes.

This half mile walk through is a way to help the 40 chosen Boy Scouts raise money to go to the National Jamboree.

“The scariest part was walking through the woods at night and not knowing what is going to pop out or chase you,” said sophomore Erin Kohm.

The haunted attraction was given a three out of five on the scary level by those who went into the woods and shockingly found their way out.

Pouch camp is located on Manor Road, is $25, and is open from dusk till midnight on October 23, 24, 25, and 30.

Yet, haunted houses today are a bit of a mockery of actual “haunted houses”.

According to Amy Raiola, from the Staten Island Paranormal Society, there are three types of hauntings: residual, intelligent, and poltergeists.

“A residual haunting is when the haunting does stuff at the same time everyday. An intelligent haunting interacts with you. A poltergeist is when people are being haunted. But the two main ones are intelligent and residual,” said paranormal expert, Amy Raiola.

Silvia Valhos another member of the Staten Island Paranormal Society explained that, they are not quick to jump and say something is paranormal, but they try to find the evidence to verify paranormal activities.

“I feel Spirits are more like cats they come out when they hear people talking. They come out when you least expect them to. When we investigate a home, I respect the spirits because I am coming into their home,” said Case Manager Brooke Haramija.

A paranormal experience or not each haunted house on the Island brings their own original touch, making them a great Halloween treat. Make your Halloween one to remember. Visit these haunted houses and get the full experience for yourself.

October 31st. The day when all those pesky children badger their poor parents for the costume of the newest television fad. The day they storm into 99 cent stores and stock up on eggs and shaving cream, which can later be found on the neighborhood schools and homes. The day when they march up to the door of under- prepared households and deafen their inhabitants with the persistent ringing of the bell and their screeches for “trick- or- treats”. The day when kids expect to receive the good candy, not the boxed cereals or bag of pretzels, free of charge and spend the night living out their sugar high.

Annoying? Maybe.

But all those aspects of Halloween are what make October 31st a perfect occasion to let out the inner child in all of us, in both the eager youngster-wannabes and the stiffened grumblers.

Oxymoronic as it may seem, the history of the day began as a mature celebration of the approaching, terrible Irish winter.

According to John Campbell’s The Gaelic Otherworld, October 31st was once a day for collecting foods for the winter and slaughtering livestock for their meat and bones, which were later burned to symbolize triumph over death. Villagers dressed in costumes and long masks in an attempt to ward off approaching cold weather and sickness.

At least, we know where the gruesome roots came from.

Since the nineteenth century, Halloween has become a fun day meant also to be funny and foolish in addition to haunting. It’s earned its unofficial status as ’holiday’ as it has become a favorite day of many children. It’s a day when kids can dress up, look outlandish, and have fun doing so.

We are, of course, including us students in the description of these fun-loving kids.

There’s no reason for an age limit on these celebrations. We may be old enough to drive and have no curfew. We may be occupied with the SATs, college application, or Regents review. But those responsibilities are also reasons to set aside one day fully

dedicated for laughter and pranks. We may not be kids, but we still have that inner child inside of us. In fact, everyone still does.

Why shouldn‘t high school students embrace their foolishness? Why are so many of us still hesitant to look silly? Why shouldn’t even parents accompany their little princesses and Star Wars characters as dazzling movie stars themselves rather than as dull mommies and daddies? Would a serious businessman really tarnish his reputation if he would embrace the inevitably present child within him once a year and dress up as a super- sized Mario or Luigi?

No one is serious all of the time. Halloween is not just for kids who know they can have fun. Teens and old, ahem, older people can and should have fun too.

And it would make a fun day into an outrageously amazing day if everyone embraced their often-masked foolishness.

Actually trick-or-treating may be another case altogether, but dressing up has never hurt anyone.

So, teachers, parents, school administrators? Take off your ties, let down your hair, and be something unexpected on the 31st.

And high school-ers? Accompany them so they don’t feel too out of place, and remember to laugh at them behind their backs just this one special day of the year.

A preview of the Boo Bags made by the Garcia Advisory

Get in the Halloween spirit and buy a Boo Bag to support our seniors.

Boo Bags are little bags filled with many different treats. Although, candy is not allowed, there are many other fun items in the boo bags. The bags consist of vampire teeth, monster bookmarks and erasers, and a lot more Halloween related items.

“I feel that more people would buy Boo Bags if they had candy in them,” said senior Adefola Adeosun.

Many people associate Halloween with candy, but it is against new Chancellor Regulations to sell candy or give it out in school.

“Our city as well as our country is facing an epidemic of obesity, so we want to make sure that the schools do not contribute to this,” said Will Havemann at the New York City Department of Education’s Office of Communication and Media.

Boo Bags are being sold by seniors in the Garcia Advisory, in order to help raise money to pay for senior dues.

Senior dues can become very pricy, but unfortunately all seniors must pay them. Dues pay for everything graduation related, but they do not pay for extras like prom and senior trips.

“I think it is a good idea to raise money for senior dues because they are expensive for many students,” said junior Kevin Conroy.

Not every student can afford to pay for senior dues and the fun activities that go along with senior year, which means they have to choose, so fundraising helps students to pay for the things they need.

Each advisee in the Garcia Advisory was asked to bring in five dollars to pay for the Boo Bags contents.

The money they make will go to Parent Coordinator, Mrs. Annette Lentini to be put towards their senior dues, which means they will not directly be given the money.

These bags are fun, and for a good cause. They can be sent to a friend, a teacher, or even to yourself.

Halloween is the time of year when people bring out the jack o’lanterns, costumes, and most importantly candy. Whether a small child, a teenager or even an adult, Halloween is all about collecting candy.

According to neopagen.net, Halloween began as a Celtic celebration for the New Year on November 1st. The Celts believed the line between the living and the dead became unclear. In order to protect themselves from the mischief of the dead, they would dress up in costumes ad built bonfires. It wasn’t until much later when the tradition was brought to America.

Today, candy is a part of American culture and is still a treat that keeps us coming back for more. But where do you go for candy? Well what’s your craving? will help you find the top candy stores, whether it’s to stock up for trick or treaters or just to satisfy your sweet tooth.

From the moment you step inside, the sweet, rich smell of melting chocolate and the overwhelming sight of treats, you feel as though Phillip’s Candy Store is where you belong.

Phillip’s Candy was Store originally opened in Coney Island in the 1930’s by John Dorman. However due to expansion in the area, Dorman moved to Forest Avenue and from then on gained the fame Staten Islanders love today.

“There’s something for everyone, we make sure of that,” said owner, John Dorman.

Phillip’s offers a myriad of different homemade, yes homemade, sweets. With caramel and jelly coated apples, home-made chocolate, flavored popcorn and chocolate dipped strawberries and grapes, it’s enough to bring anyone back to their childhood.

“My mom and dad used to bring me to Phillip’s in Coney Island when I was a little girl, and I always got the jelly apples,” said Staten Island resident, Ramona Blake. “When I found out they reopened in Staten Island, I almost cried. I was so happy. Now I can bring my little girl.”

Phillip’s Candy Shop is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., from Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Can’t resist the sweet allure of Godiva Chocolate? If not, Classic Candies in the Staten Island Mall makes sure you give into your craving right away.

Originally called Candy Barn, Classic Candies specializes in all kinds of candies we all know and love.

“It’s really hard working here,” said employee Josephine. “But not because of all the hard work. We all eat the candy here, and it’s really hard to stop when you’re surrounded by so much temptation.”

Also because of the close proximity to the schools, students don’t hesitate to visit often.

Spanish club students decorate for El Dia de Los Muertos-Day of the Dead.

Hola! Como estas? Bien. Y tú? Konnichiwa. Hello! How are you? Good. And you? Spanish and Japanese, to many people, is a first or second language used either in their home or at school.

A vibrant club last year, Japanese, will be beginning in November however, Spanish club is up and running for students to attend.

“I want the students to be in contact with Spanish food, holidays, arts and culture, movies, listen to music, play Spanish games such as soccer, and learn Spanish dances. Of course, we will be practicing the Spanish language. I’m trying to plan a trip to a Spanish restaurant as well. There are no organizations or guest speakers yet, but I do want somebody to teach the students the Spanish types of dances,” said Spanish teacher Ms. Violetta Suroweic.

“The Spanish Club seems to be a diversity of many different activities. Although I do not take Spanish as a class, I take Chinese; I feel as if that this club is leaning towards my interest. I always wanted to learn about every detail and aspect of the Spanish people. I feel like being a part of this club will help me grow in that way,” said senior Alexandra Crimmins.

However, in Spanish class, students have to complete three years in order to take the Regents examination.

“There are four levels of Spanish classes. All of the students that showed up to the exam, passed the Spanish Regents,” said Ms. Suroweic.

As a part of this club, students will taste Spanish foods, play Spanish games, and listen to a variety of Spanish music. Two years ago there was a Spanish club much similar to this, but it did not succeed because many students did not have time after school.

“The club seems interesting, especially if you take Spanish as a class. They really broadcast the club to everyone in the school. I think that a lot of people choose to participate in the club because it allows them to learn about Spanish and about the Spanish community without actually sitting in a fifty minute class,” said sophomore Chris Smart.

According to Ms. Suroweic, there are only about ten to fifteen members in the Spanish Club. “The importance of Spanish club is to enable students to get to know Spanish culture and be part of the variety of activities and practice Spanish. I just want the students to have fun and enjoy the Spanish culture,” said Ms. Suroweic

Ms. Suroweic is the advisor of the Spanish club. Every Thursday after school in Room 246, students meet to participate in activities to experience Spanish culture.

If you have a love for Spanish, or just interested in the culture, see Ms. Suroweic immediately.

“Spanish club seems fun and educational. As a member of the club, I could gain some knowledge of a different culture,” said sophomore Gilana Levin.

In addition, there is another foreign language club, the Japanese Club. Ms. Natalia Higashide was the advisor for the Japanese Club last year.

“I am planning to restart the Japanese club in November, meeting every other Thursday, or two Thursdays per month. As far as I know, there is no service credit for attending the club. We do mostly cultural things, hands-on activities. Also, we did some cooking last year. This year, some of the kids are interested in making an ‘anime’ session on one of the Thursdays,” said Ms. Higashide.

Need any tips on how to kill your worst enemy? How to hide the dead corpse of your wife? If you do, The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe is perfect for you. This lists every story, poem, and paragraph ever written by the famous horror story author.

A reader can find over 125 of Poe’s written works in this book, which contains over 100 pages of wor k by Poe.

Whether you enjoy a bloody murder, or a chilling love story, you will find something between the covers of this book.

“I like Poe because of his form of literature and the way it’s dark and entertaining at once,” said sophomore Andrew Shed.

For readers like Andrew, The Complete Tales of Edgar Allan Poe will make an excellent piece to add to any collection.

The stories found in the book all have their own dark aura about them, each one written straight from Poe’s disturbed mind.

In The Cask of Amontillado you’ll learn what happens when a man gets sick of his worst enemy. In The Black Cat Poe details how a man , so consumed by alcohol, kills his favorite animal, and his wife.

Each of these stories has its own way in the world of literature.

History buffs will also enjoy the collection. Since Poe was a writer during the 1800s, many of his stories reflect that time period.

“During the Industrial Revolution, many writers became obsessed with how man tried to control science. This was impossible and many people died. Writers found this

interesting, and it influenced the Gothic Era, which revolved around horror and romance,” said history teacher Ms. Tonya Brooks.

No matter which Poe story you like, or if you’re just looking for a book with some good horror and mystery, you are sure to find it between the covers of The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe.

Plus, it’s a perfect book to read on Halloween.
