Ladies, spring is back, and for fashionistas in the Northern Hemisphere, the thought of Spring is undoubtedly a pleasing one. The slush has melted, bare toes are imaginable, and it’s time to refresh your wardrobe.

With the global financial crisis beginning to wane, fashion lovers around the world are taking an opportunity to splurge.

With the passing of fashion figure Alexander McQueen, however stylists are questioning whether Spring Fashion Week 2010, the biggest fashion event throughout history, will create a lasting imprint on the fashion industry.

Last year, the city promised a bigger house to showcase the bi- annual event, Fashion Week. However, commencing in September 2010, New York Fashion Week moves from the traditional Bryant Park, to Damrosch Park at the Lincoln Center complex. With spring fashion being the last time a runway show has taken place Bryant Park, it is inevitable that even in rough times, “the show must go on.”

With the sudden death of Alexander McQueen, things for the spring season didn’t look too well until the models came out, dressed in short, reptile printed dresses, with their skinny legs sunk in heels that resembled wild creatures.

According to style.com, “McQueen was casting an apocalyptic forecast of the future ecological meltdown of the world. Humankind is made up of creatures that evolved from the sea, and we may be heading back to an underwater future as the ice caps dissolve.”

“I am very upset McQueen has passed away. He was one of the most talented designers in the industry.” said senior Samantha Wong. “I was looking forward to seeing his fall line in September of this year.”

Along with McQueen’s passing, current recession that all Americans have been living with for the last year has began to fade. Dovetailing with the “who cares about the recession” theme, designers took a renewed interest in feathers for spring.

“The recession really took a toll on the country this year. Every time I went to the mall I would hesitate to buy something because I was afraid I wouldn’t have any more money. Thankfully, the recession has somewhat passed so I can shop again,” said senior Susan Yacca.

According to Elle.com and nbcnewyork.com, the “frothy” look added a playful levity to the runways, and designers chose to use cut-outs, slits, mesh, lace, and more to give a sexy little peek at the skin beneath their ornate pieces.

It’s true that exposed flesh was in no short supply on the runways, especially in the tiny dresses and mini- skirts. Ironically, even though skin was exposed, the spring collection was packed with knee socks, preppy stripes, gym clothes, and academic blazers.

“This spring I am definitely looking forward to wearing a lot of dresses and mini-skirts,” said junior Paulina Plata.

Fashionistas, the aesthetic here is simple: dress clean, and elegant. Dresses, in particular, are the focus of the pared-down look featured on the runway. So remember ladies, peace, love, fashion week and Alexander McQueen.
