Summer School for Everyone!

The doors in every New York City Public School closed twice this year as two blizzards hit almost the entire northeast US within one month. Here, in New York City, that’s 1.1 million students, and 80,000 teachers scattered among almost 2000 schools getting a much needed surprise break.

Staten Island was hit with about 6-8” inches of snow on two separate occasions. Even Richmond Avenue, one of Staten Island’s busiest main roads was rendered literally car-less, as no one in their right mind wanted to get stuck in one of the largest snowstorms we’ve had for almost a decade.

With school out, and an extra day to finish that one homework assignment that we all keep on putting off until the next day, what’s not to smile about? Well, there is a catch.

There is a chance that for every day that schools are closed, the city may add one day at the end of the year.

“I don’t think there’s a point to it” said Sophomore Radwa Amhed.

“When you get that close to summer, kids won’t even do any work anyway”

This is not only striking a wrong tone with students, but teachers as well.

“I sure hope we don’t get any more snow,” said Parent Coordinator, Ms. Lentini, who also explained how school days get added in to summer only if there are more than four snow days taken.

With the great weather we’ve been having lately, and the fact that summer is just around the corner, it doesn’t seem like snow is much of a possibility.

We can all rest easy, knowing that unless Mother Nature decides to smack us in the face, we won’t be letting go of one day of summer this year.
