From the beginning of the 19th century, Disney has created princes and princesses that have made an impact on children and adults. But, never has Disney created a prince and princess like Tiana and Naveen in the new Disney movie The Princess and the Frog, which was released on December 11, 2009.
Based on the book, The Frog Princess, Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos) is transformed into a frog by an evil magician. When Prince Naveen sees Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), he believes that she is a princess who can turn him back into a prince.
However, there is a slight surprise when both of them turn into frogs and need to find the good magician that will turn them back into humans.
Produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, The Princess and the Frog is filled with music, dancing, happiness, and love for everyone no matter their social status or race.
“It was the complete opposite of a fairy tale. I liked it, though. It was childish,” said freshman Vincent Eadicicco.
This movie has made news for starring the first African American princess. Is this princess just now becoming known to the public because of our African American president?
“When I first saw the picture of Prince Naveen and Princess Tiana, I thought that Prince Naveen was a light skin African American. However, when I found out that he was black, it was a great surprise. The fact that Disney is trying to show the melting pot of America is a good thing,” said Port Richmond student, Mary Ajayi.
This movie is also interesting to watch because it takes place in the 50s, during the time when jazz was a major genre. The movie is filled with songs that will make you want to dance.
The Princess and the Frog is sure to see success, since it has been nominated for eight Annie Awards and has a video game due to come out in June based on moments from the film and adventures of Princess Tiana.
