Sen10r Column:To Schedule or to be Scheduled

This is it. Our final year. Senior year. And what every senior anticipates is an early release time. So, why are we in school for what feels like forever?

This year study hall has been added to many senior students schedules.

“What actually happens during a study hall? I didn’t even know there would be study halls on the

schedules,” said art teacher Ms. Clare Gagliardi.

Study hall is a period where students can do work such as reading assignments and study for tests and quizzes. It is being held in the library with Mrs. Hattie Slaughter until a librarian can be found.

But, even without a study hall some seniors have a full schedule. Some seniors are lacking credits while others chose to take AP courses, yet not all students who have full schedules fall into either category.

“ I have a full schedule and I feel like its ruining my senior year,” says senior Katie McSherry.

“I’m taking an extra math class and Chinese which were forced upon me. I chose to take AP Art so, I can’t complain about that,” she continued.

Yet other students, who are in school all day, don’t mind.

“ I like my schedule. Nothing on it was chosen for me. I chose all my classes, and I enjoy them,” explained senior Samantha Esposito.

Although many seniors had a full day, many of them switched their classes to have a shorter day.

“I was programmed for classes I didn’t even sign up for. I dropped my A block class and moved my math up one period so I can get out a little earlier.” said senior Ho Lee.

However, there should be no need for seniors to have a full schedule.

Teachers are contracted to work a maximum of three periods in a row and only five periods a day.

So why aren’t senior classes scheduled for the morning blocks?

“The school day is from 8:30 a.m to 3:20 p.m. Teachers teach other classes, and we tried our best. Certain classes are singletins that can’t be rescheduled at other times. There really is no gurantee that seniors will get out early, but we are doing our best to convience the seniors,” explained principal, Ms. Aimee Horowitz.

Seniors have schedules ranging from a four-block day to an eight-block day.

Although you may not be satisfied with your schedule there isn’t much that can be done until next semester.

Make the best out of it. After all, it is your senior year!
